By: Jenna Howle

The Slaton Independent School District (ISD) Board of Trustees held a regular meeting on October 8, 2024, at the Slaton Administration Office. The meeting commenced promptly at 7:00 PM, with board members and community stakeholders in attendance. Board President called the meeting to order and established a quorum. Following the invocation and Pledge of Allegiance, the board recognized the achievements of students and staff. Students of the Month, sponsored by Slaton Bakery, were honored, and October was proclaimed as Principal Appreciation Month to celebrate the leadership within the district.

During the public comment segment, community members shared their thoughts and concerns, fostering an open dialogue about the district’s initiatives. The board reviewed several key reports, beginning with the Principal’s Report, which highlighted progress and challenges across campuses. The Enrollment Report indicated a positive trend, with an increase of four students compared to the previous month. The Athletic Report brought excitement as the Varsity Cross Country Boys team advanced to the Regionals, securing third place, with their next competition scheduled at Mae Simmons in two weeks. The Facilities Report noted the completion of the sound system and gym sanding, alongside preparations for the arrival of 450 sheets of plywood. With the football district starting this week, anticipation is high for a competitive season. In terms of safety, the district welcomed a new officer from Brownfield; however, the installation of security doors and fences is still in progress. The next board meeting is set for November 14, 2024.

The consent agenda was unanimously approved, including the minutes from the previous meeting held on September 10, 2024, with a motion that passed 5-0. The board then entered a closed session to discuss personnel matters, including professional resignations and contracts for the 2024-2025 school year, as well as deliberations regarding real property. Upon reconvening, the board approved several action items, including recommendations regarding personnel, an investment training policy, enhancements to classroom technology, and upgrades to the district’s server infrastructure.

The meeting adjourned at 7:33 PM, concluding another productive session for the Slaton ISD Board of Trustees as they continue to prioritize the educational needs of the community.
