City, SISD reminds public about tornado shelters
Recently, several tornadic storms swept across the South Plains. Several of these storms had a tornado touchdown and damage, leading to the need for shelters to be open.
The City and Slaton Independent School District wanted to remind the public of tornado shelters in the City of Slaton that can be used in cases of severe weather.
“With the possibility of severe weather always present during the spring and early summer, Slaton ISD would like to share the following information about the locations of our ‘Domes’ available to the public for tornado shelters,” SISD said in a statement earlier this year.
“In the event of a ‘Tornado Watch’ issued by the National Weather Service, only the Cathelene Thomas Elementary Dome will be open.
“If an actual ‘Tornado Warning’ is issued for the area of Slaton by the National Weather Service, all Domes will be available.”
Tornado Shelters are located at:
• CTE (Open in both a Watch and Warning): South of the West parking lot at Lubbock Street and 14th St.
• Slaton Junior High (Open during a Warning only): Southwest side of the property on the corner of Powers and 11th.
• Slaton High School (Open during a Warning only): North side of Division across from the Pizza Hut.
Stephen F. Austin does not have a shelter for tornadoes.
