Veterans area to be ready by July 4
A veterans memorial on the site of the old American Legion hall in the Slaton Park will have a ribbon cutting on the Fourth of July.
Concrete was poured last week for a walkway, with a pergola planned for the area, said Pct. 2 Lubbock County Commissioner Mark Heinrich.
“We want to make it a nice veterans park with more trees and maybe a memorial,” he said.
Clif Shaw, park manager and a veteran, came up with the idea for the new addition.
He has held flag retirement ceremonies for several years. Shaw said that a fence would eventually be placed around that section of the park.
The ribbon cutting will be at 11:11 a.m. (in a nod to Veterans Day) on July 4, with performances of the national anthem and then Taps with the flag at half-staff.
