SISD installing turf at Tiger Stadium

Slaton ISD soon will have a new artificial surface, one administrators feel will be safer for student-athletes and more cost-effective.

The Slaton ISD board pre-approved a contract with Hellas Construction for the purchase and installation of the turf through the co-op process. which uses a new type of shock pad to reduce concussions and other student and turf impacts.

The cost of the project is $921,155, which the district will repay over eight years at three-percent interest. No bond money is being used for the new surface. Supt. Julee Becker said that a maintenance position was eliminated through attrition, and that the yearly savings from not maintaining a grass will help pay the note.
