Tigers to take on Sanford-Fritch in season opener

The Slaton Tigers open the 2018 season Friday (Aug. 31) at Sanford-Fritch with confidence after a successful scrimmage against 4A Snyder in their final tune-up.

“I thought it was a good test,” said Slaton head coach Jeff Caffey, entering his first season at the helm. “Anytime you can play a division higher than you going into the season is good. I thought we rose to the challenge and got better.”

Caffey said he felt good entering the season as head coach, having been on the staff last year. Prior to the Snyder scrimmage, the Tigers opened the pre-season with a scrimmage against Abernathy, a perennial playoff team.

“Our scrimmages were tough. We face a three-round deep playoff team in Abernathy and a big 4A school in Snyder and we hung in there with both teams,” he said. “Our scrimmages were tough but it helps us. We played physical for our size and were flying to the ball and putting every pound into every hit.”
