Three officers were honored for valor and a new police officer was sworn in at the Slaton City Commission’s short meeting Monday.
Officers Joseph Kibitlewski and Jeremy Chavez and dispatcher Mkayla Villareal were given the Meritorious Service Award for saving the life of a Slaton resident.
Kibitlewski and Chavez were in the same class at the South Plains Association of Governments Police Academy. Kibitlewski has been with the department for a year, while Chavez is leaving the department after 18 months to take a bailiff post at Lubbock County Courthouse.
Villareal has been a dispatcher for three years in Slaton, coming over from the Lubbock dispatch where she was the dispatcher for the tactical team.
Police Chief Trevor Barnes said the sensitive nature of the case and medical privacy laws prevented him from delving into the details, but said their quick work prevented the death of a local resident.
