Former principal’s second career takes flight

Coming from a family of educators, Lori Andrus knew early that she wanted to be a teacher.

And after 36 years in education, the former Cathelene Thomas Elementary principal’s second career is about to take off — literally.

Andrus is attending training in Dallas today to become a flight attendant for Southwest Airlines.

“I knew I wanted to continue to be productive, despite how much I enjoy lingering over coffee,” she said.

Andrus said her daughter-in-law in Denver has been with Southwest for 10 years, and told her that the airline was opening up applications for the position. The company only left the application window open for four hours.

She and her husband, Slaton ISD Asst. Supt. Jim Andrus, enjoy traveling with their fifth-wheel trailer, so Lori decided to apply.
