Flu spreading like ‘wildfire’ through Slaton

Cases of flu and strep throat struck Slaton ISD hard at the start of the week, and local healthcare providers say cases are on the rise.

On Monday, some 80 students were absent at both Cathelene Thomas Elementary and Slaton Junior High School each.

“We have about 17 percent of our students absent on Tuesday,” said Supt. Julee Becker.

Becker said the district would consider closing all campuses when absences reach between 40 and 50 percent. She said that crews were sanitizing campuses throughout the day Wednesday during a scheduled staff development day.

It wasn’t just students who were afflicted, either, with 25 teachers calling out sick Monday.

“I’m inundated,” Al Bendeck, Physician Assistant at Slaton Family Medical Center, said. “It hit us late, but it’s a wildfire in Slaton.”
