The Slaton Police Department is urging residents to secure their vehicles after a rash of car thefts.
Sgt. Steve Dekraker said that there have been at least six cases over the past three weeks where people have warmed up their vehicles and the thieves simply enter and drive away. The majority of those vehicles were recovered after a short time.
While it seems practical to heat up a vehicle on a cold morning, it is illegal to leave a vehicle unattended with the engine running and the key in the car, said Police Chief Trevor Barnes.
