Slaton officer escapes serious injury following five-car accident on 84
Freezing temperatures in Slaton over the weekend caused havoc on U.S. Hwy. 84 early Sunday, with a Slaton police officer being involved in a five-car pile-up.
Slaton dispatch received a call about a one-vehicle accident on the new overpass on E. U.S. Hwy. 84 just before 6:30 a.m. The vehicle had hit a patch of ice on the highway and Slaton police officer Joseph Kibitlewski responded. After parking some 30 yards behind the wrecked vehicle and engaging his emergency lights, Kibitlewski saw another vehicle lose control. According to Slaton Police Chief Trevor Barnes, Kibitlewski dove over the center console before the third car struck the rear of his patrol unit.
