SPD reminds public about fireworks ordinance

The Slaton Police Department is reminding the public about ordinances regarding fireworks as well as safety firing them.

Chief of Police Trevor Barnes said it is against city ordinance to be in possession of fireworks in the city limits. Fireworks are considered items not sold at a Walmart, which sells items such as sparklers and poppers.

Fireworks may also not be fired off in the city.

Police will be out during the holiday week reminding the public of the ordinance.

Additionally, SPD wants to remind people to clean up their garbage after firing fireworks.

Barnes said it will be considered illegal dumping if garbage is left on county property.

Those firing fireworks in the county also must have permission from the property owners to fire them.

There will also be a fireworks display in the city Saturday evening after the July 6 fundraiser on the square. Barnes warns there will be loud noises and said pets sensitive to sounds and those with PTSD need to be prepared.
