Filing period open for 2 council seats

The filing period to apply as a candidate to fill the unexpired terms of Mayor and Councilmember Ward IV is now open.

Applicants can now turn in their packets to City Secretary Pam King at City Hall, 130 S. 9th St. in Slaton between 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Those filing could start turning in their application packets July 20; however, as the date fell on a Saturday, filing opened up Monday.

The last day to file will be Aug. 19.

King said so far Lynn Nowlin, Coy Evans, Sonny Bullard, Clifton Shaw and John Gatica have filed for mayor.

Two people have picked up a packet for the Councilmember vacancy, but neither have turned them in as of press time.

The election will be conducted on the next scheduled election date, which is Nov. 5. The election is in accordance to the city charter and Election Code for the State of Texas.
