City Commissioners approved an interlocal agreement with Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office on housing dogs and cats on a temporary basis at the Slaton Animal Shelter Monday evening (Aug. 12) during their regular meeting at City Hall.
Chief of Police Trevor Barnes discussed the reason for the need to have this agreement.
“So what’s happened is Brillhart Vet Clinic has shut down, and Lubbock County used Brillhart 100 percent to house all their animals. (If) they found a stray in the county they took it to Brillhart,” he said, adding the clinic shut down rapidly.
“They’re looking for a place to house their animals. So my request today is this interlocal agreement with you guys. So all it is is a temporary situation to house these animals.”
While the shelter is already housing dogs and cats due to the emergency, Barnes said this was indeed short term. “This is not at all permanent – this is not the plan,” he said. “Today is its just simply working with the agreement to allow this to happen.”
