Nowlin elected Mayor in runoff

The City of Slaton has a new Mayor.

In final unofficial results, Lynn Nowlin  defeated John Gatica in a runoff election Tuesday evening (Dec. 17).

A total of 738 people voted during the runoff.

Nowlin received 60.30 percent of the votes with 445 total, while Gatica had 39.70 percent of the votes with 293 total votes.

In the Nov. 7 election, Nowlin had 32.74 percent of the votes with 257 total, while Gatica had 28.54 percent of the votes with 224 total votes.

A candidate must have 50 percent plus one of the votes to be elected, requiring the runoff.

Nowlin will be sworn into the office during the next City Council meeting after the votes are certified.

An election will be set in May to fill the Commissioner Ward II position currently held by Nowlin.
