More than 149 volunteers loaded up bags full of Christmas cheer to deliver to more than 140 families, including more than 300 children, and the homebound in need Saturday morning (Dec. 21) during Santa Red and Blue.
The event set a new record for volunteers and those helped.
Chief of Police Trevor Barnes said the program has been going on for they believe more than 30 years, at least since 1966. He has been a part of the event for 12 years and said it has grown since.
Barnes complimented groups such as Blattner Energy and Neal Aircraft among others for their generous donations financially. “The money came from the community and it stays with the community,” he said, adding even the food they got from the South Plains Food Bank was paid for with the donations.
But most of all he thanked the volunteers for their time and service. “This is comprised of volunteers from the fire department, police department, EMS and obviously a whole lot of community volunteers behind us,” he said.
