It may have taken a few months for it to celebrate its opening, but Gypsy Road RVs did it in style as they cut the ribbon to their business Saturday morning (Feb. 29) during a ribbon cutting ceremony.

The business, located at 1401 N. Hwy. 84 here, has a variety of new recreational vehicles for sale.

James Atkinson, owner, said this was his and wife Virginia’s second dealership. “We had a dealership in Waco that we sold about a year and a half ago with the intention of retiring,” he said.

That said, the words retirement and Atkinson are not synonymous with each other. “Well that lasted about five months,” he said with a chuckle. Atkinson has moved more than 20 times in his life, admitting he was “basically a Gypsy at heart.”

This reflected in the business’ name. “When I saw a sign coming up from Waco that had “Gypsy” on it I knew that had to be part of the name,” he said.

The decision to be a bit of traveller again lead to him searching in West Texas for a new home for their business. “I came out and started looking and after over a month of looking in the Lubbock area, I finally stumbled on this building by accident when I was on my way back home,” he said. “Just happened to get off on this exit and I said… there is my dealership. And after two months of negotiation with the people that owned the property we finally came to terms.”
