Slaton Chief of Police Trevor Barnes said that the department usually spends 90 percent of their time training and 10 percent doing, mostly the unexpected.
This unexpected happened to be the case for Officer Tommy Higgins Thursday (Feb. 28) when he was called to assist with a birth of a baby boy.
The call came in at 11:41 p.m. Feb. 26 in Zone 2 of Hwy. 84 W. The mother, Dedra Dean of Post, was having contractions and on her way to Lubbock, with her sister driving. She found they were coming too close together and they pulled over.
Dean’s mother called 911 after both vehicles had stopped.
Higgins, who has been an officer at SPD for 10 months, was dispatched to the scene to assist with the delivery, but when he arrived, the baby had been born.
The officer instead focused on the safety and health of those on scene, deferring any in-depth medical assistance to EMS.
