Members of the community who have been looking forward to participating in the Caprock Classic 25th Annual Rock & Roll Nostalgia Car Show and Cruise are in luck – the event is still set to take place July 17-18 in Slaton.

July 17 will be the Cruise-in down Panhandle Street and Texas Avenue, 7 p.m. Participants need to arrive by 6:30.

July 18 is the Car show, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. City Square.

Rick Povlich, the president of Caprock Classic, said most local car shows have been canceled and that he is hopeful the Slaton event provides people with the opportunity to get out of the house, enjoy classic cars and even safely socialize with neighbors.

“We’d be glad to get out and come out, finally get the cars out, socialize a little bit,” he said.

“But I realize with this whole COVID thing — I’m optimistic, but you never know. We’re gonna have to go through the motions and just make believe everything is normal and we’ll see what happens.”

“I think the City of Slaton’s got a lot riding on this, we have a lot riding on it — we’ve already spent lots of money, you know, for awards and T-shirts and stuff — so we want it to happen, and this is our 25 anniversary and so we were hoping to make it bigger and better,” Povlich said, chuckling, “but we’re just going to have to kind of play it by ear.”

As of press time Tuesday (July 14), Nowlin said she had created masks to hand out to patrons who came to the show if they did not have one, and encouraged all to wear masks and social distance
