SPD arrests 1 in check forgery case

The Slaton Police Department made an arrest in a case of a forged check.

Sumya Jamice Johnson, 21, of Oklahoma, was arrested on a charge of forgery of a financial instrument.

Sgt. Steve Dekraker said SPD was called to a bank located in the 1800 block of W. Division St. July 8 in reference to a subject trying to pass a forged check.

Officers arrived and made contact with Johnson. They then contacted another bank to find the owner of the check, and found that the account owner had not written a check to the person. They also found the check had been altered, which led to the arrest.

Dekraker said he then did an invetigation and found Johnson had gotten cash from other banks that day to the tune of approximately $57,000.

Dekraker said there are believed to be three co-conspirators in the case. He added that they believe Levelland and other metropolitan areas were also hit. Federal charges are also pending.

The case is under investigation with the Department of Public Safety investigation unit and Secret Service.

Johnson was taken to the Lubbock County Jail, and has since been released on bond.
