Local man receives 20 years in string of area burglaries

A Slaton resident will be serving 20 years on three charges of burglary of a habitation.

Slaton Police Department Sgt. Steve Dekraker said Jim Waylon Leake, 35, was arrested on nine charges of burglary of a habitation and a parole violation for a previous burglary of a habitation. He also had a charge of theft between $750 and $2,500.

Leake admitted to the thefts as part of a deal. The sentences will run concurrent.

Dekraker said Leake had stolen primarily firearms, and was caught after a burglary on S. 19th St. where a safe, at least 10 weapons and 22,000 rounds of ammunition were stolen.

He added that Leake was tied to burglaries on 15th St. and a few others he was seen on video.
