Trustees conduct public hearing

The Slaton Independent School District Board of Trustees conducted a public hearing on the proposed budget and tax rate Monday evening (Aug. 31) during a special called meeting.

The hearing opened at 6:01 p.m., and no one signed up to speak about the rate. Board President Carlos Bentancourt closed the hearing at 6:03.

They also adopted the tax rate for the 20-21 year. The rate will remain the same at $1.36; however, where the money is distributed has been adjusted. The rate will be $1.0082 set aside for maintenance and operations, while the remaining $0.35410 will be set aside for interest and sinking.

The board approved a budget amendment for the 2019-20 year. The debt service revenue number was incorrect, and should have read $1,635,000, which is slightly lower than the original number listed. The revision was done to protect the district should they be audited.

The board appointed Gabriel Johnson to fill the District I position as well as approve 2020-21 budget items Monday evening (Aug. 31) during a special meeting.

Johnson will finish the term of Milton Smith, who resigned recently.
