SPD, others fight Friday bee swarm

When people want to know what the “buzz is all about” they don’t mean it literally.

Friday afternoon (Sept. 11) at 4:57 p.m. however, the buzz turned out to be real as the Slaton Police Department, EMS and others worked to contain a bee swarm in the 600 block of S. 9th St. and Division.

Chief of Police Trevor Barnes said initially the call had been in reference to a bee relocater trying to move a hive from a house.

He said when the person set the ladder down, the bees started to swarm and spread out to attack anyone who helped.

“The beekeeper was asking the police for help. He couldn’t get to his phone,” said Barnes. “He couldn’t reach it, so he was yelling at the officers through the cars. All we could do was talk through the windows. It’s pretty sad, but it was just all around a terrible situation.”
