City mourns death of 2nd commissioner
The City of Slaton is mourning the loss of another of their council members.
Weldon “Squeaky” Self, Commissioner Ward I, died Tuesday evening (Dec. 29) after a long illness.
“It is with great sadness the City of Slaton announces the loss of City Commissioner Weldon ‘Squeaky’ Self,” said Mayor Lynn Nowlin and City Administrator Mike Lamberson in a joint comment Tuesday evening.
“The City thanks you for your understanding and kindness for this loss.”
Self served many years on City Council and was elected in 2019 to serve another term.
Nowlin and Lamberson said there will still be no changes to council meetings at this time.
Currently, the City of Slaton will continue under the direction of Mayor Lynn Nowlin, Mayor Pro-Tem and Commissioner Ward III Benny Lopez and Commissioner Ward II Jim Taliaferro.
A vacancy will be filled by State of Texas election laws in the near future.
Self is the second commissioner to die in the past two weeks.
Charlie C. Haynes Jr., Commissioner Ward IV, died Friday (Dec. 18).
Funeral arrangements for Haynes are pending at Griffin Mortuary in Lubbock.
Self’s will be listed as soon as they are available.
