The City of Slaton commissioners conducted their first ever Zoom and Facebook live meeting Monday evening (Jan. 11) at City Hall.
Mayor Lynn Nowlin said this was allowed per an order from the Office of the Governor issued March 16, 2020 due to COVID guidelines regarding capacity.
She asked the public to bear with them as they make this transition for the next few months. “We are using our new technology, which we just had available, so we’re doing Zoom video conferences,” she said, adding that anyone who has questions or issues with the system or format to contact her, Commissioner Ward II Jim Taliaferro or Commissioner Ward III Benny Lopez.
They will be doing this for at least three months, as they are allowed only a limited number of people in the City Hall and Chamber for health precautions, especially to maintain a quorum after the deaths of two commissioners.
A moment of silence was given for Commissioners Ward I Weldon “Squeaky” Self and Ward IV Charlie D. Haynes, who passed away in December.
Nowlin added the agenda will be posted for the meetings, conducted on the second Monday of the month, both at the front of the building and online at cityofslaton.org.
