The City of Slaton has announced candidates who have filed for election for the Mayoral and Commissioner Wards I, III and IV positions.
Commissioner Ward IV is a special election to fill the unexpired term of Charlie D. Haynes, who died in December, and the other three are in the regular election cycle. The Mayor, Commissioner Ward I and III positions are for two year terms.
Mayoral candidates are, in alphabetical order, John Gatica, Jacob Parker, Jessie Perez and Clifton Shaw.
Commissioner Ward IV candidates are Frankie Cisneros, Valarie Cubit and Bradley Gaydos.
Tony Newton has filed for the Commissioner Ward I position, while Benny Lopez has filed for the Ward III position.
The Commissioner Ward II seat, held by Jim Taliaferro, is not on the ballot again until the 2022 election.
Candidates for commissioner and Mayor must meet the following criteria to be eligible to run:
• A citizen of the United States
• 18 years of age or older
• Have not been declared mentally incapacitated or partially mentally incapacitated by a final judgment of a court exercising probate jurisdiction.
• Have not been finally convicted of a felony from which they have not been pardoned or otherwise released from the resulting disabilities.
• Resided in the State of Texas for one year and the City of Slaton for six months.
• A qualified voter.
The Slatonite will publish candidate announcements of those running as they become available. Election is May 1.
