4 running for Mayor seat

Four candidates for City of Slaton Mayor were asked a series of questions from the community during a Mayoral Candidate Forum Wednesday evening (April 14) in the Slaton High School Auditorium.

John Gatica, Jacob Parker, Jessie Perez and Clif Shaw are running for Mayor.

Early voting has begun and will continue through April 27 at the Slaton Independent School District Administration Office, 140 E. Panhandle Ave. Election times are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. daily, except April 27 when voting is from 8 a.m.-8 p.m.

Election Day is May 1. Polls will be open 7 a.m.-7 p.m., and voters will have to vote where they are registered.

(Editor’s note: All candidates’ answers are summarized responses from the forum conducted April 14. Candidates are listed in alphabetical order for fairness).

Question: Why do you want the job?

Gatica: Has the skill set and wants to share it with the community. Wants to give back because that’s what a person does. Also said was a dream to be a mayor, as he looked up to them in his childhood.

Parker: Slaton is his home, and family and friends live here. Wants to serve the community and make Slaton a good place to raise a family.

Perez: Said he moved back in September, thought the City was dying off, and wanted to make things better. Thinks he can make Slaton better and wants to catch it up to other towns around them.

Shaw: Feels the need to serve the community and knows the people. He has ideas to share with the council and work on possibly implementing some of them. He wants everyone involved and sharing.
