The City of Slaton Board of Commissioners was once again full after the swearing in of new Mayor Clif Shaw and Commissioner Ward IV Valarie Cubit Monday evening (June 14) during its monthly meeting in City Hall.
This marks the first time since December the Council has had all seats filled, after two Council members, Commissioner Ward I Weldon “Squeaky” Self and Ward IV Charlie D. Haynes, Jr. died.
Past Mayor Lynn Nowlin thanked the Board for allowing her to serve as Commissioner Ward II, Mayor Pro-Tem and then Mayor. She said while she was not sad to leave her last meeting as Mayor, she was “very blessed” to have been able to serve the City. “It’s been wonderful most of the time – 99 percent of the time,” she said. “I’m very happy to have been able to be in this position for all these years and it’s been wonderful.
“It’s been great, and I appreciate all the support and participation.”
City Secretary Pam King canvassed the election. The final official votes had Shaw receive 426 votes compared to 363 votes for opponent John Gatica, and in Ward IV, Cubit received 65 votes to opponent Frank Cisneros’ 60.
