Karen and Jerry McGwier of Slaton had the surprise of a lifetime as they lead the start of a NASCAR 220 race June 12.

The couple, who own the Slaton Speedway on FM 400, said they had a friend who they asked to watch indoor kart racing in Wichita Falls.

“He brought a friend of his. That friend had never been to an indoor kart race,” she said. “As I talked with him and introduced him to the other drivers and teams.”

The friend also was associated with Speedy Cash, a sponsor of the race. “This friend was taken away at how Slaton Speedway and our family works so hard keeping family first,” Karen added. “A few days later, he asked if we would  be the grand marshal of the truck race along with our children and grandchildren. Jerry and I were so happy to say yes. An honor we never dreamed of, but were very excited to do.”
