The City of Slaton Commissioners approved the first reading of an ordinance designating Slaton as a sanctuary city for the unborn Monday evening (Nov. 15) during its regular monthly meeting.

The ordinance passed the first reading on a 4-1 vote, with Benny Lopez voting no, while Valarie Cubit-Johnson, Jim Taliaferro, Tony Newton and Mayor Clif Shaw voted for it.

Lopez said after the meeting while he supported the reason for the ordinance, he had read it but questioned the wording.

The ordinance must have a second reading, which will be in December, in order for it to go into effect.

New Police Officer Zachery Montez was sworn in by Shaw during the meeting. His wife Denise pinned on his badge.
