The City of Slaton Commissioners approved the second reading of an ordinance declaring Slaton a Sanctuary City for the Unborn Monday evening (Dec. 13) during the board’s monthly meeting.

The vote was 5-0, with all four commissioners and Mayor Clif Shaw approving the second reading.

Chalon Whaley, a long supporter of the bill, was pleased to see the ordinance pass. “I’m overwhelmed with joy right now that we are officially the first city in the county to become a sanctuary city for the unborn. Thank you,” she said, thanking all commissioners on the vote.

The board also conducted a public hearing on the Community Resiliency Program Application for the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs.
