State bound!: 4 qualify in powerlifting

Past two years it has been one Tigerette powerlifting qualifier going to State.

This year, there will be four.

The Slaton Tigerette powerlifting team competed in the Regional Powerlifting contest Saturday (March 5) in Shamrock.

The team placed fourth overall and four lifters – Amaya Ramos, Paige Rodriquez, Sierra Rodriquez and Jaclyn Loera, all qualified for the State  competition.

The top two in each weight division, or if a person hits the automatic qualifier total qualify for the State event but all 12 lifters hit personal bests.

Those placing were Ramos – first and also earning best squat in heavyweight; P. Rodriquez – second; S. Rodriquez – second; Loera – third; Angelina Mireles – fourth; Ariana Mendez – fourth and Samantha Espinoza – fifth.

Also competing at Regional were Jocelyn Santos, Karime Portillo, Alexia Anderson, Jazlyen Perez-Whaley and Solida Mata.

The State contest will be March 19 in Corpus Christi.

The boys will compete Saturday (March 12) in Sundown.
