Pair of Tigers earn 4th place medals, finish Powerlifting season at Regional

The Slaton Tiger Powerlifting team saw its season end in Regional Competition Saturday (March 12) in Sundown.

Although there will be no qualifiers for the State meet this year for Slaton, two lifters medaled.

Daniel Leyva placed fourth in Weight Class 242, lifting a total of 1,365 pounds.

Alex Quintero also placed fourth in Weight Class 275, lifting a total of 1,460 pounds.

Also competing was Trent Wright, who bombed out.

Bryson Salazar also qualified for Regional but scratched from the competition.

In addition to Slaton, Roosevelt High School also had four lifters at the Regional Meet with four advancing to the State meet.

Placing top in their weight divisions were Alex Trevino, who lifted 1,390 total pounds in Weight Class 181 and Nate Gensler, who lifted 1,450 total pounds in Weight Class 198.

Placing second and qualifying were Eric Cruz, lifting a total of 1,010 pounds and placing second in Weight Class 132 and JJ Diaz, who lifted a total of 1,575 pounds in Weight Class 220.

Those Eagles who qualified will now compete at the State tournament March 26 in Abilene.

Slaton still has four athletes competing at the State tournament in the girls’ division.

The quartet, along with Roosevelt’s Jaleigh Hinojosa, who also qualified, will be competing this weekend (March 17-19) at the State meet in Corpus Christi.
