The Slaton Independent School District Board of Trustees approved an attendance requirement for math and science teacher stipends June 14 during the Board’s regular monthly meeting.
Superintendent Jim Andrus said this was a stipend for structured learning teachers who teach the two subjects. They start at $1,000 the first year, then it goes up to a maximum of $3,000. This is a bonus to what they earn in their salary.
He added they were asking there to be a 96 percent attendance rate to earn the stipend. This means teachers could take up to seven and a half extra days off during the year to earn it before they lose the bonus.
Andrus said he wanted it to be implemented out of fairness for teachers, adding there are some missing many days and still getting the stipend.
The attendance requirement for the stipend will be for both Junior and High School math and science teachers.
