Church youth, SPD work to help clean up roads

Slatonite GM

Some drivers going through Slaton Wednesday evening (July 13) may have had a bit of a surprise seeing around 20 youth on the side of the road picking up trash.

All part of a service project for Bible Baptist Church Youth.

Youth Minister Cooper Downer said they were approached by the Slaton Police Department to help with the clean up event.

“Chief (Trevor) Barnes reached out to us to see if our youth group would be willing to help in our community and we were glad to help in any way,” he said.

“Our kids are all apart of this community, so to get them out and get active in our community is important.”

Barnes said he had been doing a lot of work in reference to back taxes, and during that time, noticed the “significant amount of litter” on the highways and in other areas.

“We have identified them and we’ve also identified a group of people to help us out,” said Barnes, referring to Bible baptist. “They have a strong youth group.”

They picked up trash from Allsups down to the overpass, collecting about 20 bags of refuse.
