Fly serving FUMC as part-time pastor

Joseph Fly has been named part-time pastor of First United Methodist Church.
Fly, who started July 1, also pastors at Cooper United Methodist in Woodrow.
He started in the ministry 18 years ago on a part time basis. “I’d been teaching at South Plains College for a few years, really enjoyed it, but I always felt a call to ministry,” he said. “I didn’t really understand the call of when I had a good job that I enjoyed doing.
“Then, one of my supervising pastors said, ‘We know they always need part-time pastors,’ so I was assigned at Cooper in the Methodist Church – that we call appointments, so the DS who’s in charge of like 50 churches will put pastors where they’re most needed.”
He added this year was a “strange year” for United Methodist Church, and there was a shortage of pastors. “So they needed someone to serve here on a part-time basis, so I’m actually doing both. I serve here part-time and still serving Cooper part time.”
