City conducts hearings, approves budget

The City of Slaton Commissioners approved a proposed Operating Budget for the Fiscal Year 2023 Tuesday evening (Sept. 6) during a special meeting at City Hall.

The Commissioners also amended the budget to allow a transition period of 30 days for Dispatch from City to County.

Tim Travis with the Texas Municipal Police Association, spoke to the council and said he understood the difficulty they had in making the decision, but wanted to know how the implementation would work.

He was concerned about a “flip of a switch” effect, such as having the transition done in two weeks.

“I think there is a better way to accomplish that same goal, that same mission, in a safer, more deliberate manner,” he said, adding that an implementation phase allows for processes to be developed.

“You get to put those processes into place,” Travis added.

A question was asked of City Administrator Wade Willson if the budget could be amended.

He said it could be but it would be up to the Commissioners’ decision.
