Slaton Veterans, their families and students commemorated Veterans Day Friday morning (Nov. 11) with a program in the Slaton High School gymnasium.
Speaker of the hour was Senior Petty Officer Jay Taylor, retired US Navy.
He asked students what it meant to be a veteran.
“If we look at Title 38 of the Code of Federal Regulation, it defines a veteran as a person who served in the active duty military, naval or air service and who was discharged or released under (anything) other than dishonorable conditions,” he said.
Taylor however added it was more than what the legal definition said.
“Being a veteran was a choice. It’s a choice that we chose to serve our great country. Maybe a veteran shows that he or she loved this great land and was willing to stand up, took an oath to be a protector, put on a uniform, stand opposed and say ‘not on my watch’,” he added.
