Tiger powerlifting qualifies 2 to State, earns 4th as team

The Slaton Tiger Powerlifting team added more hardware for their awards case, and sent two lifters to State Saturday (March 11) during the Texas High School Powerlifters Association Regional meet in Sundown.
The team placed fourth overall and those qualifying for State were Bryson Salazar and Daniel Leyva.
Leyva also set a new Regional bench press record with a 440 pound bench lift.
Also earning a medal was Mason Martinez, who placed fifth in his weight class.
Individual finishes were:
Salazar, first place in weight class 165 with a total of 1,325 pounds.
Leyva, first place in weight class 242 with 1,600 total pounds.
Mason Martinez, fifth place in weight class 181 with 1,205 total pounds.
Colton Engle, sixth place in weight class 148 with a total of 1,115 pounds.
Zamion Davila 10th place in weight class 148 with a total of 1,045 pounds.
Collin Simmons, seventh place in weight class 165 with a total of 1,125 pounds.
Ricardo Balzadua, 8th place in weight class 181 with a total of 1,180 pounds.
CJ Linarez, 10th place in weight class 198 with 1,180 total pounds.
Bobby Quintero, 10th place in class 275 with 1,185 total pounds.
Alex Quintero bombed out in the contest.
Salazar and Leyva will next compete in the State powerlifting meet March 24-25 in Abilene.
The Tigerette powerlifting State qualifiers are competing at State this week (March 15-18) in Frisco.
Qualifiers are Paige Rodriquez, Destiny Doss, Karime Portillo, Jaclyn Loera and Sierra Rodriquez.
Dates and times are as of press time Tuesday (March 14).
Results of the Tigerettes’ State competition will be in next week’s edition, and the boys’ results will be reported in the April 6 edition.
