Election canvassed for Ward I, runoff scheduled
The City of Slaton Board of Commissioners canvassed the May 7 Ward I Commissioner Election May 16 during a special meeting at City Hall.
They also canvassed the recount Tuesday (May 23) after it was counted at the Lubbock County Elections office
City Secretary Pam King read the results, which showed a tie between incumbent Tony Newton and challenger Mike DeLano.
Both candidates each received 19 votes, for a total of 38 votes. The count was confirmed in the recount with no errors.
The board set a new election Tuesday during a special meeting at City Hall. It will be conducted June 24 from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. at City Hall.
Early Voting will be June 12-20 from 8 a.m.-6 p.m., with the exception of June 17-19.
The election is for Ward I residents only.
The board also swore in the two unopposed seats for Mayor Clif Shaw and Commissioner Ward III Benny Lopez.

Volunteers sought to place Memorial Day flags at cemetery
People of all ages are needed in helping to place American Flags at Englewood Cemetery for all men and women who served in the military.
Those interested will meet at the Cemetery office at 6 p.m. Friday (May 26) to install the flags.
They will meet again Monday (May 29) to help remove the flags.
