The 2023 cotton ginning and baling season is winding down for the year.
As of press time Tuesday (Dec. 26) Lubbock Cotton Growers was the only gin still producing bales in the local area. WesTex Coop, Texas Star Coop, Idalou Coop and New Home Coop finished their seasons.
The total as of press time Tuesday is 292,358 bales, and while it does not look like it will make a Top 10 spot, this year more bales were ginned than last year’s 154,828.
Totals so far this season are WesTex Coop with a final count of 61,157 bales, Texas Star with a total of 58,074 total bales, New Home Coop Gin final count of 36,118 total bales, Lubbock Cotton Growers with 75,896 bales and Idalou Coop with a final count of 61,113 bales.
The current record for bales is 2021, when a total of 741,556 bales were produced.
The Weekly Bale Count is on Page 7 and will continue running in The Slatonite until all gins are finished, and a season by season comparison will be in a future edition once all gins have completed their season.
