Janet Jo James
Janet Jo James, 87, of Slaton, TX passed away on September 21, 2024, surrounded by loving family.
Janet was born March 19, 1937, in Nutter Fort, WV, the daughter of Scott James and Virginia Batton. After her mother’s passing, she was raised by her father and stepmother, Lulu Evans James.
Janet graduated from Washington Irving High School in 1955, then went on to join the Navy from 1955 to 1962, specializing in communications. Janet continued working in data processing, from the time of punch cards to working for various data entry companies. She eventually created her own data processing business.
Janet was an avid team bowler, winning several trophies from the 60s to the 80s. She enjoyed all types of games, from playing cards and working jigsaw puzzles to dominos and dice, but had several standing game nights with friends, including Mahjong, Shanghai, and Rummikub. While she loved playing with her friends and teaching her many nieces and nephews all the games, she definitely had a competitive streak. Janet was also a lover of cats and dogs and cared for many throughout her life.
Janet’s church home was Hearts Together Church of Christ. With a servant’s heart, she was actively involved in the mission of the church.
She also was a member of the Slaton Senior Citizens Center, where she served on the Board, volunteered with Meals on Wheels, called Bingo, made daily announcements, helped wherever was needed, and so much more. She gained a large family through all of her friends in the Slaton community.
Remaining to cherish Janet’s memory are her brother, Ted James (Theada); nieces and nephews, Serelle Laine, Brenda VanHorn, Bernard Evans, Virginia James, Eric James (Cheryl), Rebecca Enis (Deric); grand-nieces and nephews, Christie Shearrow, Jennifer Farrell, Barbie Shearrow, Austin Burke, Lauren Burke, Brian VanHorn, Sam James, Caleb James, Joshua James, and Emily Enis.
Preceding Janet in death are her sister, Mary Lou Rawlins; stepbrothers, Bill Evans (Mim), Richard Evans, Don Evans (Jean), and all her four-legged friends who have crossed the Rainbow Bridge.
Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, September 28th at 2:00pm at Hearts Together Church of Christ, with Laredo Shannon officiating.
Memorial donations in Janet James’ memory may be directed to the Hearts Together Church of Christ Scholarship Fund, the Slaton Senior Citizens Center, and/or the Salvation Army.
