National Day of Prayer in Slaton set for May 1

The Slaton Ministerial Alliance will host a National Day of Prayer May 1 at 7 p.m. at the Gazebo on the square in Slaton.

Ross Hester, Chief of Slaton Police Department, will post the American Flag and the pledge will be led by two local veterans from Hearts Together Church of Christ: Averd Parks who was a First Lieutenant in the Marine Corp and served in Vietnam; and Layne Hardesty who was Petty Officer Third Class in the Navy and served tours in the Persian Gulf and Bosnia.

The Junior High School choir will sing the National Anthem, “America the Beautiful,” and two other songs they have sung in competitions this year, “Follow the Drinking Gourd” and “Poor Wayfarin’ Stranger.”

Darren Weaver from the First Baptist Church will introduce the Alliance members and read a scripture.

Terry Reeves from Mighty Oak Assembly of God will talk on the theme of the day which is “Pour out to the God of Hope” Romans 15:13.

Henry Wilson will lead a prayer for Slaton; Jesse Lopez of the Apostolic Church will pray for the national government; Mark Meuer from Mercy Retreat will pray for the mayor and City Council; Joseph Fly from First United Methodist will pray for the local and state government; and Pete Paniagua from the Catholic church will pray for the schools.

Guests will need to bring their own lawn chairs.
