SEDCO approves funding Downtown Strategies Plan

The Slaton Economic Development Corporation approved the first year of a Downtown Strategies Plan Thursday (April 17) during its regular meeting.
Director Lezlee Harlan said they presented the plan to the Commissioners Court to see if it would sponsor half of the $90,000 over three years cost using funding set aside for the arts and downtown improvements, but said it denied the project.
Harlan said however she felt the project was a good idea, as it would help prepare the town for the growth in the county between Loop 88’s construction and other projects that will head into Slaton. It would also allow the City to get organized and have ordinances in place so when the growth came into Slaton, they were prepared.
She said the funding could come from the unrestricted fund balance, and then after the first year suggested they go back to the Commissioners Court to see if they would fund the second half of the project.
