Library hosting annual summer reading activities

From Staff Reports

The Slaton Library may be preparing for its move to the new location on the Square, but Librarian Cynthia Olivares said there will be several summer reading activities during summer.

Colleen’s Corner: Reading Ready started last Friday (June 6), but will be conducted through June at 10 a.m. at Slaton City Hall.

This program will take place on Fridays and Mondays during the month of June – 16, 20, 23, 27 and 30, and is targeted for children ages Kindergarten-Second who may be struggling with reading.

It will be lead by Colleen Shand Wilson, an educator with 30 years of experience, 29 of which were dedicated to teaching kindergarten, has since transitioned to supporting K-5 students in Resource Inclusion.

Wilson has a commitment to both general and special Education, and the library said she is passionate about empowering every child to learn, particularly those performing below grade level and with disabilities. Her mission is to nurture society’s most vulnerable learners through literacy and dedicated support.

Participants will learn how to use phonics to ready, which plays a vital role in helping children connect letters to sounds and form words.

As young learners develop phonics skills, ongoing exposure to reading across genres such as fiction, nonfiction, and poetry which enhances language development, fuels imagination and strengthens critical thinking and sparks curiosity

There will also be Story Time with Paul Bullock: Friday (June 13) at 10:30 a.m.

Monthly Parenting Cottage Story will be  June 18th at 10:30 a.m. Each family will receive a book and craft (while supplies last).

Olivares also has Summer Reading Trackers available for all ages.  For more information, visit the City of Slaton Library Facebook page
