Genealogy Society to host Beginner Series
The South Plains Genealogical Society will have a Beginner Genealogy Class series starting Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. at the Mahon Library. It will be conducted the every third Monday of the month for the year.
The class, which is hosted by the Society and Mahon Library, helps people start from square one and grow all year. They will teach people to use real records, find long lost ancestors and prevent them from being overwhelmed in the search.
The first three topics are:
• September – Genealogy for real people: “Not royalty? No problem. We’ll show you how to start your family tree with what you do know… even if it’s ‘Grandpa was in Texas… maybe?’. Leave with your first pedigree chart and a real research question in hand.”
• October – What the Heck is a GEDCOM?: “Ancestry, FamilySearch, MyHeritage—so many apps, so little patience. We’ll break down what’s free, what’s worth paying for, and what a GEDCOM even is.”
• November – Vital Records, Census, and Church—Oh My! “If it’s old and has a name on it, we want it. Learn where to dig up birth, marriage, death, and census records—even if your ancestor was ‘born somewhere in the South.’ Practice your search skills and leave with real finds.”
The public is invited to attend, and quarters will be updated in future editions of The Slatonite.
