SISD mourns teacher killed in crash

Slaton ISD mourned the death of a fellow teacher who was killed in a car crash this past weekend.

Leo Schneider died Saturday (March 28) in an accident on FM 1585 just east of Avenue P around 10 p.m.

Slaton ISD announced Schneider’s death Sunday (March 29) in Facebook post.

“With a heavy heart, we share that Slaton ISD lost a beloved high school faculty member, Leo Schneider, last night in an automobile accident.  Mr. Schneider touched many lives as a high school science teacher,” the post read.

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Mr. Schneider’s family, friends, colleagues, and students during this incredibly difficult time.

“As a community, we come together to support one another, remember his impact, and honor the difference Mr. Schneider made in so many lives.

“Counselors will be available at the high school campus,” it added. “Please keep everyone affected in your thoughts and prayers.”

The Texas Deaprtment of Public Safety reported preliminary investigation determined that a 2021 Ford Mustang collided into the rear of a 2016 Dodge Ram pickup traveling eastbound on FM 1585.

The collision caused the pickup to travel into the westbound lane and collide head-on with Schneider’s 2017 Nissan Armada.

All six occupants of the Ram were transported to University Medical Center with moderate injuries. All but one wore seatbelts.

Bode Sam Arnold of Lubbock, 28, was the driveer of the Mustang. He was not injured, but was arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter.

Arnold is being held at the Lubbock County Detention Center on a $100,000 bond.
