SPD warns public about caller scams

The Slaton Police Department is warning the public about recent phone scams that can cost people money.

SPD reported it has received reports of the scammers calling people claiming there is a problem with a bank account or a legal issue, such as a warrant, and demanding immediate payment.

They ask for money using gift cards, cryptocurrency and other non-traditional payments.

SPD said that no legitimate organization will ever demand payment using any of these items, payment apps such as CashApp, Venmo or Zelle, or do a wire transfer.

It siad if anyone is asking for payment using any of these methods, it’s a scam.

“Protect yourself: Don’t rush, always verify, do not call the number the provide, only use verified numbers from official websites or documents,” SPD said in a press release.

“No Law inforcement agency – local state or federal government – will call asking for payment, especially by the methods listed.

“They will always send an official letter.”

Those who think they may be dealing with a scammer are asked to visit www.ftc.gov to file a report or contact their local law enforcement agency.
