Raised on a cotton farm just outside Slaton, Rachyl’s upbringing was deeply rooted in family and community. She attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School until sixth grade before moving to Slaton Junior High, where she benefited from the close-knit educational environment.
The Slaton community and Slaton ISD significantly influenced Rachyl’s development. Dedicated teachers and faculty played a crucial role in her academic and personal growth. Her involvement in the FFA program allowed her to earn scholarships, and the dual credit program at Slaton ISD helped her get a head start on her college education, both academically and financially.
Rachyl’s family has a long history in Slaton, and growing up surrounded by relatives reinforced her love for the small, rural community. This deep connection to her roots has shaped her values and sense of identity.
Choosing Texas Tech University for her undergraduate and master’s degrees was a natural fit, given its proximity and strong agricultural programs. Rachyl’s future plans include completing her master’s degree and pursuing a career in agriculture, aiming to promote the industry innovatively.
Despite her professional ambitions, Rachyl remains committed to giving back to the Slaton community. She values the lessons and support she received and plans to stay involved in her hometown’s growth and development.
To young students in Slaton who are uncertain about their futures, Rachyl said, “it’s okay not to have everything figured out.” She encourages them to focus on understanding themselves and their desire to help others, trusting that their paths will unfold in time.
Rachyl Kitten’s journey reflects the nurturing power of Slaton’s community and education system, showcasing the town’s ability to foster success and a strong sense of belonging.
She leaves us with the bible verse Jeremiah 29:11 “ For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, “they are plans for good and not for distater, to give you a future and a hope.”
