At 135 E Panhandle Street in downtown Slaton, J. Martin Plaza stands as a beacon for local businesses, housing both the Slaton Side Door Barber Shop and The Slatonite newspaper. Landlord and owner Justin Martin is committed to keeping the spirit of local entrepreneurship alive. “I just want to keep local businesses going,” said Martin. “I love having everyone here, and I would do anything for them. I’m very fortunate and glad I can help keep The Slatonite going strong.”
Inside the building, The Slatonite team continues its work, led by General Manager and Editor Jenna Howle. “Please stick with me on everything,” she said, “I’m still learning and trying my best every day. I’m excited to be here and have enjoyed visiting with each of you.” The Slatonite can now be reached by phone for calls or text messages at 806-828-6201, and readers are encouraged to contact Jenna at [email protected].
Eloitha Zapata-Martinez, who handles classifieds, legal notices, and advertising, is also an active presence in the community. “I try my best to be at as many events around the community as I can,” she said. “If you see any pictures I took of your kiddos, just message me or come by, and I’ll gladly share them with you.” For any advertising inquiries, you can reach Eloitha at [email protected].
The Slatonite is now in its 113th year, and thanks to the efforts of its team and the support from Martin, it continues to serve as the voice of the community.
Slaton Side Door Barber Shop adds to the Plaza’s local charm. Monique Ruiz, the owner, is eager to help the community. “I’m excited, and we all help each other out,” she said.
Her shop is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. To book an appointment with Monique, call 806-777-1817.
Another barber, Jimmy Briseno, is also available by appointment. You can reach him at 469-212-4112, or call the main shop number at 806-860-5679 for assistance.
J. Martin Plaza will soon launch a Facebook page where the Slaton Side Door Barber Shop and The Slatonite will share updates and connect with the community. These businesses embody the tight-knit, supportive atmosphere of Slaton, and with the continued efforts of Justin Martin and the tenants of J. Martin Plaza, the local business scene is sure to thrive.
