“The Spirit of Slaton” Restoration Project
By: Jenna Howle
In the heart of Slaton, a pivotal project is steaming ahead with a mission to preserve a vital piece of the town’s railroad heritage. The ATSF 1809 restoration project, led by the dedicated Bob Mamlok and his team, aims to ensure that the last Class 1800 2-6-2 Prairie locomotive in Texas remains a testament to the town’s vibrant history.
Mamlok, the Chairperson of the ATSF 1809 Restoration Project Citizen’s Advisory Committee, emphasizes the importance of this initiative. “The 1809 restoration project was started to ensure the preservation of the legacy of Slaton’s railroad heritage,” he says. “Our future is intricately linked to our rail history. The Harvey House, the ATSF 1809, and the Slaton Model Railroad Studio all play crucial roles in drawing tourism and fostering civic pride.”
The restoration will address critical needs such as painting and sealing the locomotive, and providing a new protective cover against the elements. The estimated cost for these essential tasks is $350,000. Fundraising efforts are already underway, and every contribution, regardless of size, is invaluable. Mamlok invites the community to participate in this collective endeavor. “Opportunities to join us in this community effort can be found at spiritofslaton.com,” he notes.
The team is aiming to kick off Stage 1 of the restoration before the 70th birthday celebration of the ATSF on Slaton Square, scheduled for September 15, 2025. This event promises to be a significant milestone, celebrating both the locomotive’s legacy and the town’s enduring connection to the Santa Fe Railroad.
Slaton’s dedication to honoring its past while looking towards a bright future is evident in this project. As Mamlok reflects, “Slaton is a wonderful community with a rich history and a promising future. Let’s work together to realize that future by honoring our heritage as the town the Santa Fe Railroad built.”
